Rally Croatia's notoriously slick asphalt roads delivered a brutal opening day shakeup, claiming two of the World Rally Championship's biggest names in shocking fashion. Championship leader Elfyn Evans and Monte Carlo winner Oliver Solberg, who entered the event first and second in the standings, saw their weekends end prematurely in a dramatic turn of events.
Elfyn Evans, who had stormed to an early 15.8-second lead by winning the first two stages, saw his rally unravel on Stage 3. The Toyota driver admitted he was "caught out" by a tight right-hand corner, carrying too much speed and firing his GR Yaris off the road and into the trees. Onboard footage suggested a potential miscommunication with co-driver Scott Martin's pace notes. While both crew members were unharmed, the car was stuck, marking Evans's second consecutive retirement after exiting Safari Rally Kenya.
This exit is particularly surprising given Evans's reputation for flawless consistency; this was only his second retirement since late 2024. "The corner was a bit tighter than expected," Evans explained. "It is very disappointing. Obviously, it was a strong start... but it didn’t end so well."
The drama didn't stop there. Evans's closest title rival, Oliver Solberg, saw his rally end almost before it began. Just 4.8km into the very first stage, the Hyundai driver clipped a rock face, sending his i20 N into a 360-degree spin before beaching the car off the road. For the Monte Carlo winner, it was a heartbreakingly short outing.
An emotional Solberg pointed to the challenge of adapting to the hard-compound tire on the tricky Croatian tarmac. "The feeling in the car... has been fantastic," he said. "But... with limited experience, I basically just drove a little bit too fast in this corner."
These dual retirements throw the championship wide open and underscore the razor-thin margins in top-level rallying. Croatia's unpredictable surface, which can change from dry asphalt to damp, polished concrete in an instant, demands absolute precision—a lesson delivered harshly to the series' top contenders. The door is now wide open for the chasing pack to capitalize on a dramatic day of attrition.
