The 2026 high school baseball season arrived with both the Sandia Matadors and Eldorado Eagles facing significant roster transitions. While every team deals with change, it's the Eagles who have found their rhythm faster, turning potential into performance at the perfect moment.

That momentum was on full display Saturday, as Eldorado secured a crucial District 2-5A doubleheader sweep on the road, defeating Sandia 8-6 and 13-7. The victories weren't just wins; they were a statement. "The pieces we needed to work on are starting to flourish at the right time," said a satisfied Eldorado coach Ambrose Romero after the games.

This matchup carried the weight of recent history, a rematch of last May's Class 5A state championship where Sandia emerged victorious. For the Eagles, this doubleheader was about more than district standings—it was about redemption. "We took it personal, because they did take a championship ring away," declared senior catcher Sully Wilson. "They took everything from us."

That personal motivation fueled a dominant performance. While Sandia has struggled to replicate its championship form after losing key players, Eldorado has seamlessly blended promising newcomers with veteran leadership. The result is one of the most formidable teams in 5A, now sitting at 17-4.

The sweep propelled the sixth-ranked Eagles (17-4, 4-2) past the Matadors (11-11, 3-3) into second place in the district, behind La Cueva. More importantly, it puts Eldorado in prime position to secure a coveted first-round home series for the upcoming 5A playoffs, provided they finish strong against Manzano and Santa Fe.

Eldorado's success stems from a team finally clicking at the right time. "It’s a whole different team, but we’re finally figuring out how to play together," explained Wilson, who was a force at the plate with seven hits across the two games. "We always preach that we’ll be ready in May."

After weathering early-season bumps, including losses to Cibola, Rio Rancho, and district leader La Cueva, the Eagles showcased their resilience on Saturday. They built an early 6-0 lead in the opener before holding off a fierce Sandia rally in the seventh inning. The offense was creative, too, with Maddox Gonzales driving in three runs without a official hit, using a fielder's choice, a sac fly, and a hit-by-pitch.

The day was capped by an explosive eight-run sixth inning in Game 2, highlighted by a two-run homer from senior centerfielder Tim Kamphuis. "We had to get these two wins over a special team like that, feels amazing," Kamphuis said. For Eldorado, hitting their stride now means they are precisely where they want to be: peaking as the playoffs approach, with teamwork and tenacity leading the way.
