El Paso Locomotive FC's 2026 U.S. Open Cup journey came to a halt on Wednesday night, as they were handed a 4-1 defeat by MLS powerhouse Houston Dynamo FC in the Round of 32. The match at Shell Energy Stadium proved a tough test against top-flight competition.

The Dynamo set the tone with breathtaking speed, finding the net in just the second minute. Ondřej Lingr stunned the visitors with an audacious bicycle kick, giving Houston an immediate 1-0 advantage and putting El Paso on the back foot from the opening whistle.

The Locomotive's task grew exponentially more difficult midway through the first half. Defender Kofi Twumasi was shown a straight red card in the 25th minute for a last-man foul, forcing El Paso to navigate the remaining 65 minutes with only ten men—a monumental challenge against an MLS opponent.

Houston capitalized on the numerical advantage after halftime, doubling their lead almost instantly. Just 30 seconds into the second half, Mateusz Bogusz struck to make it 2-0. The pressure continued, and Nicholas Markanich added a third goal in the 58th minute, seemingly putting the game out of reach.

To their credit, the shorthanded Locomotive showed fighting spirit. Roberto Ávila pulled a goal back in the 75th minute, offering a brief moment of hope. However, Houston's Ezequiel Ponce extinguished any comeback hopes just five minutes later, sealing the 4-1 victory for the Dynamo.

Attention now turns back to league play for El Paso. They must quickly regroup as they prepare for a crucial USL Championship showdown this Saturday night, hosting rivals San Antonio FC at Southwest University Park with an unbeaten league record on the line.
