El Paso's own Tristen Newton is adding another major accolade to his impressive resume. The former Burges High School star has been named to the All-NBA G League First Team, a testament to his dominant performance this past season.
Newton proved to be a scoring machine in the G League, averaging 25.6 points per game—the third-highest mark in the entire league. His journey saw him suit up for the Iowa Wolves while on the Minnesota Timberwolves roster before finishing the season with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers after signing with the Houston Rockets. His standout play also earned him a coveted spot in the 2026 All-Star Weekend's Rising Stars competition, playing for Team Austin under coach Austin Rivers.
This recognition is the latest chapter in a basketball career defined by winning. Before his professional journey, Newton was a cornerstone of a historic college dynasty at Connecticut, where he won back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024 and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 Final Four. His path to UConn began at East Carolina University, showcasing the development that made him the No. 49 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers.
For his hometown, this honor is a point of pride. Newton, a three-time El Paso Times All-City selection and the 2019 City Player of the Year, continues to represent Burges High School on basketball's biggest stages. His relentless work ethic and scoring prowess, honed right here in El Paso, are now being recognized at the professional level, marking him as a name to watch for every basketball fan.
