After 12 transformative years at the helm of Eastern Illinois University's athletic department, Tom Michael is packing his bags and heading back to his home state of Illinois. Since taking over as athletic director in 2014, Michael has left an indelible mark on the Panthers' program, steering seven different teams to Ohio Valley Conference championships during his tenure.
"He's an outstanding person, a great human being," said EIU President Jay Gatrell, reflecting on Michael's leadership. "And I can tell you he leads an amazing team. So he'll be an asset a few miles up the road."
Under Michael's watch, the Panthers' facilities received a major upgrade, with new or renovated spaces like Frost Field, Gardella Family Court, Groninger Arena, and the Lantz Weight Room. But it wasn't just about bricks and mortar. Michael navigated the rapidly changing landscape of college athletics, adapting to the challenges of NIL deals and the transfer portal with steady hands.
"He always says make sure we give them back better than we got them," Gatrell added. "And that's a commitment to the whole person, not just for the competition, but also the classroom and really creating a connection to our campus. If you come through our program as a student athlete, you're part of the Eastern community, and he talked about that, he lived it and has been an extraordinary sort of ambassador for those values and our mission as an institution."
As Michael moves on, the search for his successor is already underway. Gatrell confirmed that a search committee has been formed and will meet in the coming weeks to find the next leader who can build on Michael's legacy of championship success, facility growth, and a holistic approach to student-athlete development.
