Big changes are coming to the San Mamés dugout! Athletic Bilbao has officially announced that former Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic will take over as head coach next season, signing a two-year deal to replace the departing Ernesto Valverde.
Valverde, who announced back in March that he would step down at the end of the campaign, leaves behind a legendary legacy. The 60-year-old tactician ended Athletic's 40-year trophy drought when his side lifted the Copa del Rey in 2024, etching his name into Basque football folklore across three separate stints at the club.
Terzic arrives with plenty of pedigree. The 43-year-old German has been out of work since leaving Dortmund at the end of the 2023-24 season—a campaign that ended with heartbreak in the Champions League final, falling 2-0 to Real Madrid at Wembley. But his resume speaks volumes: he won the German Cup in his first spell at Dortmund in 2021, and came agonizingly close to the Bundesliga title in 2022-23, missing out on the final day. He also served as assistant to Slaven Bilic at West Ham and Besiktas, gaining valuable experience across European football.
With Athletic currently sitting eighth in La Liga and just three points off the European spots with four games left, Terzic inherits a competitive squad with a proud identity. Fans will be eager to see how his attacking philosophy—shaped by Dortmund's high-energy style—translates to Bilbao's unique Basque-only recruitment model. One thing's for sure: the San Mamés faithful are in for an exciting new chapter.
