Eddie Hearn has dropped a bombshell revelation about Conor Benn's departure from Matchroom, claiming the British welterweight turned down not one, but three world title opportunities before making the shock switch to Zuffa Boxing earlier this year.
The split sent ripples through the boxing world back in February, as Benn walked away from Hearn's promotional stable despite the promoter's steadfast support through a turbulent two-year period that began with the fighter failing two drug tests. Benn's loyalty to Hearn seemed unshakeable during that saga, making the move to Zuffa all the more surprising.
Since joining Zuffa, the 29-year-old has fought just once—a catchweight victory over former champion Regis Prograis in April. But with Benn expected to return to his natural welterweight division, the question on everyone's lips remains: who's next?
Speaking to multiple outlets including Boxing News, Hearn pulled back the curtain on the negotiations that never were. "When Lewis Crocker won the world [IBF welterweight] title, I was like: 'Oh, my God. Crocker vs Benn at the O2 for the world title!'" Hearn recalled. "I went to Conor and he was like: 'Nah, I don't want that fight.' Then he eventually started talking about the rehydration policy and all that kind of stuff."
But that was just the beginning. Hearn revealed he also had a deal in place with Rolly Romero's camp. "We had that fight done with Luis DeCubas. Benn was like: 'It's not a very big fight.' I'm like: 'Mate, you're getting a WBA world-title fight in London. I think you can beat Rolly Romero.'"
The third offer was perhaps the most intriguing—a clash with IBF super-welterweight champion Josh Kelly at the Stadium of Light. Benn's response? A blunt refusal. "I think he knows his limitations," Hearn said. "So why would you get beat for small money when you can get beat for bigger money?"
Benn's career has been a rollercoaster. He was undefeated until last April, when he suffered his first professional loss to Chris Eubank Jr. But he avenged that defeat in emphatic fashion in November, dropping Eubank Jr at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium en route to a clear decision victory.
With reports suggesting Zuffa paid Benn a staggering $15 million for a single fight, the pressure is on for the young star to deliver against a marquee name. While his victory over Prograis was solid, the boxing world is still waiting for the blockbuster matchup that his new deal promises.
