Earn Your Time: How the Flyers Rookies Stuck Around This Season

The Philadelphia Flyers' 2025-26 season was defined by its youth movement—some of it anticipated, some of it a pleasant surprise. When injuries and trades opened doors, a trio of rookies under 22 years old stepped through and never looked back.

Denver Barkey got the call when Tyson Foerster went down in December. Alex Bump joined the lineup after Bobby Brink was dealt at the trade deadline. Porter Martone arrived in late March following the conclusion of his NCAA career. Each player faced a unique path to the NHL, but they shared one crucial trait: they gave the Flyers every reason to keep them in the lineup.

What made their impact even more impressive was their composure under pressure. The bright lights of playoff hockey didn't faze them. Barkey, Bump, and Martone each scored their first career NHL playoff goals and played pivotal roles in Philadelphia's postseason run. It's easy to forget how they got there when their contributions speak so loudly.

"I almost kind of forget about these little moments, because we get in the playoffs, and those guys played such a big role," Flyers GM Danny Briere said. "They just made it, and they hung around, and their play kind of dictated the fact that they stayed around and played more."

The original plan for each rookie was a minimal role. Briere recalled his conversation with Barkey: "I told him, 'You're just going to be here for the weekend. We have a couple of games, and then you're going to go back to Lehigh.'" But Barkey, who turned 21 during the playoffs, had other ideas. He didn't give the team a reason to send him back to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

For fans and players alike, these are the moments that define a season—and build the foundation for the future. Whether it's a timely goal in the playoffs or a steady presence on the ice, these young Flyers earned their time.
