No. 18 USC baseball put on a masterclass Thursday night, overwhelming Nevada with a rapid-fire offensive explosion that secured an 8-0 shutout victory at Dedeaux Field. The win marked the Trojans' fifth straight triumph and showcased a team firing on all cylinders.
The tone was set immediately. Just three pitches into USC's first at-bat, the Trojans grabbed the lead. Before many fans had even settled into their seats, a barrage of hits—including two home runs—had pushed the advantage to four runs. By the end of the third inning, USC had built an 8-0 cushion that proved insurmountable.
Adrian Lopez, Jack Basseer, Andrew Lamb, and Walter Urbon all went deep for the Trojans (39-12), continuing a recent offensive surge that has seen the team average 11 runs per game over their last four outings. This is a notable turnaround for a squad that entered the contest ranked No. 7 in the Big Ten in home runs, No. 8 in runs scored, and No. 9 in batting average.
"It's the perfect match," Basseer said. "Our pitching is still doing what they've always done, and the hitters are really doing a great job scoring runs."
On the mound, ace Mason Edwards (8-0) continued his dominant season, combining with three relievers on a seven-hit shutout. The bullpen delivered a critical moment when left-hander Ben Cushnie inherited a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh inning and escaped without allowing a run, striking out two and inducing weak contact.
"That was huge," Basseer added. "You're expecting at least one run to come in, and to strike out two guys and get weak contact on the third out is huge."
The only blemish on an otherwise flawless night was USC's inability to add to their lead after the third inning. The Trojans stranded seven baserunners and struck out 14 times over the final five frames, a detail head coach Andy Stankiewicz noted for improvement.
"We went five straight goose eggs to finish the game," Stankiewicz said. "We've got to be better from that side of it, but it was a great start, absolutely."
With the win, USC improved to an astounding 30-1 at home this season, continuing their dominance at the newly renovated Dedeaux Field. The Trojans will look to keep their momentum rolling as they prepare for the next challenge.
