The NFL rumor mill is heating up, and the New England Patriots might not have the clear path to landing A.J. Brown that many expected. While the Patriots have been widely viewed as the frontrunners to acquire the Philadelphia Eagles' star wide receiver, a surprising challenger has emerged from the NFC North: the Green Bay Packers.
According to Simon Hunter of Sharp or Square, the Packers are "sneakily in the conversation" for the three-time Pro Bowl wideout. "I know everyone swears A.J. is going to the Patriots," Hunter said. "I've heard whispers about Green Bay being another team that's sneakily in the conversation for A.J. Brown."
The timing makes sense. Philadelphia is expected to wait until after June 1 to finalize any deal, and the Packers have a clear need at receiver. Green Bay recently traded Dontayvion Wicks to the Eagles, and they also lost their top wideout from last season, Romeo Doubs, who signed a four-year deal with—you guessed it—the Patriots back in March.
While the Packers aren't the favorites, they have the assets to make a competitive offer. A future second-round pick could be enough to get their foot in the door and force New England to up its bid. For a team that didn't make major offensive moves in the draft, adding a proven 1,000-yard receiver like Brown could be a game-changer.
This summer's wide receiver market just got a lot more interesting. The Patriots may have been counting their chickens before they hatched, but the Packers are ready to crash the party. Whether Green Bay can outduel New England for arguably the best wideout on the market remains to be seen—but one thing is certain: A.J. Brown's next destination is far from decided.
