The Athletic has named the Philadelphia Eagles the team with the best offseason among all NFL title contenders, and for good reason. After finishing fourth in pass defense DVOA last season despite a glaring weakness at cornerback opposite Quinyon Mitchell, the Eagles made a decisive move by signing free agent Riq Woolen. Woolen, one of the most athletic players at his position, occasionally has lapses in technique, but he's a massive upgrade over what the team had before and has room to grow. The addition of pass-rusher Jonathan Greenard via trade only strengthens a defense that could be even more dominant than last year's unit.

On offense, the impending post-June 1 trade of A.J. Brown would be a significant loss, but the Eagles have taken an intriguing approach to replacing him. They drafted slot receiver Makai Lemon, who excels in the middle of the field, and tight end Eli Stowers, essentially a big slot with similar strengths. This is a notable shift, as quarterback Jalen Hurts has targeted the intermediate middle of the field at one of the lowest rates in the league—a trend that has persisted across multiple play-callers. New offensive coordinator Sean Mannion may look to change that by incorporating more play-action concepts, moving away from the Shane Steichen-installed offense of 2021. With this being the final season of guaranteed money on Hurts' contract, the pressure is on for him to prove he can grow as a passer and age gracefully as his athleticism declines. He's already won plenty of games and a Super Bowl, but that doesn't guarantee a lucrative extension if his game continues to slip.

In other Eagles news, the team hosted free agent defensive back Nazeeh Johnson for a visit at the Jefferson Health Training Complex on Monday. Johnson, who turns 28 in July, was originally drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs and could provide additional depth to a secondary that's already looking much stronger this offseason.
