The Philadelphia Eagles have made another bold move in their front office, hiring former New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan as a personnel executive. The announcement came Wednesday, signaling the team's commitment to shoring up their scouting and evaluation departments after a busy offseason of changes.
Maccagnan's tenure with the Jets from 2015 to 2019 was a rollercoaster that ultimately derailed. After a promising 10-6 debut in 2015, the franchise spiraled into three straight losing seasons—finishing 5-11, 5-11, and 4-12. His draft record was particularly rocky, with notable misses including first-round linebacker Darron Lee, second-round picks Devin Smith and Christian Hackenberg, and third-round selections Lorenzo Mauldin and Ar'Darius Stewart. While he made a few savvy moves, the overall roster-building left much to be desired, especially in supporting young quarterback Sam Darnold during the 2018 season.
Since being fired in 2019, Maccagnan spent seven years away from the NFL, most recently working as a football evaluation specialist for SumerSports. Now, the Eagles are giving him a fresh start. He'll likely assist with both pro and college evaluations, bringing decades of experience to a front office that has lost several key members this offseason. Before his Jets stint, Maccagnan spent four years as Houston's director of college scouting and began his NFL career as a pro scout with Washington in 1995.
In related moves, the Eagles also promoted former Wall Street banker Adam Berry to assistant general manager, further reshaping their leadership team. With the team currently listed at +1400 to finish with the best regular season record on DraftKings, these front office additions could prove crucial as Philadelphia looks to stay competitive in the NFC.
