Eagles beat Broncos to offensive weapon by 8 picks in NFL Draft

Philly ends up being the winner here, not Denver.

The Philadelphia Eagles pulled off a savvy move in the 2026 NFL Draft, snagging a top-tier offensive weapon just ahead of a division rival. The Denver Broncos, widely expected to target a tight end early, found themselves outmaneuvered—and they have the Eagles to thank for it.

According to a new report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Broncos had their eyes on Vanderbilt tight end Eli Stowers. Denver hoped to grab him with the 62nd overall pick, but Philadelphia swooped in and selected Stowers eight spots earlier. "The Broncos would have considered Vanderbilt's Eli Stowers if he made it to No. 62," Fowler wrote, highlighting just how close the Broncos came to landing their guy.

Instead, Denver waited until the fifth round to address the position, selecting N.C. State's Justin Joly. The Broncos see potential in Joly as a pass-catching threat, especially after his strong 2024 tape at a lighter playing weight. He won't be asked to carry the load immediately, but the team hopes he can develop into a future leader at the position.

For Philadelphia, the move makes perfect sense. Starting tight end Dallas Goedert is entering the final year of his contract and is on the wrong side of 30. Stowers now steps in as a natural heir, giving the Eagles a young, dynamic option to build around.

It's a classic draft-day chess match: the Eagles got their man, and the Broncos are left hoping Joly can make them forget what might have been. If Stowers becomes a star in Philly, it'll sting a little more in Denver. But if Joly blossoms, the Broncos might just look back and call it even.
