Dylan Volantis is making Friday nights his personal showcase, and the No. 4 Texas Longhorns are reaping every benefit. In a clash of college baseball titans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, the sophomore left-hander delivered a masterful performance, powering Texas to a 3-1 victory over the No. 10 Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Despite a rain delay that pushed back the first pitch, Volantis was locked in from the start. Facing a Mississippi State squad riding high on three consecutive SEC series wins and boasting the second-best batting average in the conference, he tied his career high with 12 strikeouts over six scoreless innings. The dominant outing marked his third straight Friday win, improving his season record to a perfect 7-0.
Volantis, a towering 6'6", 220-pound frame on the mound, showed both power and poise early. In the first inning, he navigated a tricky situation: a one-out, full-count strikeout turned into a runner on first thanks to a wild pitch, followed by an infield single. But the ace didn't flinch, responding with back-to-back strikeouts—the final one a devastating 1-2 curveball that left batters shaking their heads.
The second inning saw Volantis get a crucial boost from his battery mate, junior catcher Carson Tinney. After a one-out single, Tinney threw a laser to second base, cutting down an attempted base stealer and shifting the momentum back to Texas. Volantis closed the frame with yet another strikeout.
The Bulldogs threatened again in the fifth inning, putting runners on second and third with two outs after a single, a wild pitch, a walk, and a stolen base. But Volantis, cool under pressure, fired a high 3-2 fastball past the hitter for a strikeout, showcasing the kind of clutch pitching that has defined his season.
After Volantis departed following 107 pitches, head coach Jim Schlossnagle turned to junior left-hander Haiden Leffew. Leffew struck out two in the seventh and escaped a two-out double unscathed. In the eighth, with Schlossnagle wary of overusing freshman right-hander Sam Cozart—who logged five innings over two appearances last weekend—the bullpen held the line, securing the win and keeping the Longhorns rolling in SEC play.
