The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team saw their GPAC tournament run come to an end Thursday, falling 5-3 to top-seeded Midland in an elimination game at Schilke Fields in Fremont, Nebraska. The fourth-seeded Tigers fought hard but couldn't overcome an early deficit against the tournament's dominant force.
Midland struck first, plating two runs in the third inning before adding three more in the fourth to build a commanding 5-0 lead. The Warriors' offense was powered by Maddison Zach, who went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Jaidan Wehrle chipped in an RBI double, while MaKenna Watkins and Sophie De Rouin each drove in a run to keep the pressure on DWU.
On the mound, Midland's Mackenzie Groninga was nearly untouchable early. The Warriors' ace went the distance, allowing just three hits and two earned runs while striking out 14 Tigers. It was a performance that showed why Midland (38-13) earned the top seed and advanced to face Hastings in the bracket final.
The Tigers didn't go quietly, though. They finally broke through in the fifth inning with a run, then mounted a late rally in the seventh, scoring two more. Liliana Arreola led the DWU offense, driving in two runs, while Macy Moore added an RBI double. Alessandra Ciurca recorded the team's only other hit. Alison Ernsberger took the loss for Dakota Wesleyan, pitching six innings and allowing seven hits and five earned runs while striking out four.
DWU finishes the season with a 35-17 record, a solid campaign that has the team eyeing a potential at-large bid to the NAIA national tournament. The selection show is set for May 6, with 48 teams chosen for 10 opening-round brackets. While 30 automatic berths go to conference champions, the Tigers' RPI ranking of 30 in the latest NAIA poll puts them in the conversation. However, their Massey Rating of 48—a key selection criteria—makes the wait a nervous one for the squad.
Whether this is the end of the road or just a pause before a national tournament run, the Tigers have shown grit and determination all season. Their fans will be watching closely on May 6, ready to celebrate if their name is called.
