Durham have moved quickly to bolster their pace attack, signing South African speedster Duanne Olivier for the remainder of the County Championship season. The 33-year-old replaces West Indies quick Kemar Roach, who was forced to cut short his stint after pulling a hamstring during the draw against Middlesex—a spell that saw him claim nine wickets in just three matches.
Olivier, who last played Test cricket for South Africa against New Zealand in early 2024, is no stranger to English conditions. With 106 first-class wickets from 32 matches for Derbyshire and Yorkshire, he brings a wealth of experience and a knack for thriving in the county circuit. His overall first-class record is impressive: 578 wickets at an average of 23.84, a testament to his consistency and wicket-taking ability.
"I've always enjoyed playing in England, and the challenge of county cricket is something I've long appreciated," Olivier told the Durham club website. "I've been following the first few weeks of the County Championship, and I'm excited to join the guys, contribute, and get stuck in."
Interestingly, Olivier was originally slated to join Durham in the second half of the season, but Roach's unfortunate injury has fast-tracked his arrival. This could be a timely boost for a Durham side currently sitting top of Division Two, having won two and drawn two of their opening four red-ball games. The team's early-season form has been impressive, and adding a proven performer like Olivier only strengthens their push for promotion.
Durham's next challenge comes on Friday, when they travel to New Road to face Worcestershire. With Olivier now in the mix, fans will be eager to see how quickly he can adapt and make an impact on the pitch. For a side aiming to maintain their momentum, this signing could prove to be a game-changer as the season unfolds.
