Big news out of the Anaheim Ducks' prospect pipeline: third-round defenseman Tarin Smith has officially committed to the University of Minnesota for the 2026-27 season. The 20-year-old made the announcement via Instagram, and it's a move that has Golden Gophers fans buzzing.
Smith just wrapped up an impressive third full season with the Everett Silvertips of the WHL, where he served as team captain. The right-shot defenseman put up standout numbers—16 goals and 55 assists for 71 points—proving he's more than just a stay-at-home blueliner.
"I'm excited to announce my commitment to the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers for the 2026–27 season," Smith wrote. "I want to thank everyone in Everett—my teammates, coaches, staff, and fans—for four incredible seasons and for helping me grow both on and off the ice. I'm grateful for everything along the way and can't wait to get started on this next chapter."
Selected by the Ducks in the third round of the 2024 NHL Draft, the Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan native is known for his crafty, creative style of play. At 6-foot-2, he brings size to the blue line, but it's his hockey IQ and vision that really set him apart. He averaged a whopping 23 minutes per game for Everett, a testament to his reliability and impact.
Smith's path to this point hasn't been without obstacles. After a strong season with the U18 AAA Saskatoon Blazers in 2021-22—where he recorded 34 points and 66 penalty minutes in 43 games—he missed the entire 2022-23 season due to shoulder surgery. But he roared back in his draft year with 8 goals and 36 assists, silencing any doubts about his recovery.
He's now a key piece of new Golden Gophers head coach Brett Larson's recruiting class, joining other notable prospects like Colorado Avalanche draft pick Christian Humphreys and Calgary Flames third-rounder Mace'o Phillips. For Ducks fans, this commitment is a positive sign that Smith is developing on schedule—and that his best hockey is still ahead of him.
