The Ducks rallied to tie the Golden Knights in the third period, but Pavel Dorofeyev scored on a rebound 4:10 into overtime to seal Vegas' Game 5 win.

The Anaheim Ducks are now one loss away from an early summer vacation after a heart-breaking overtime defeat in Game 5 against the Vegas Golden Knights. Pavel Dorofeyev played the role of hero for Vegas, scoring on a rebound just 4:10 into the extra frame to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night. The goal came after Dorofeyev batted the rebound of a Jack Eichel shot out of the air, sneaking it just inside the left post to end the longest game of the series.

With the win, Vegas takes a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven second-round playoff series. Game 6 shifts back to Anaheim on Thursday, where the Ducks will face elimination on home ice.

The game was a back-and-forth thriller from the start. Anaheim’s Beckett Sennecke and Vegas’ Dorofeyev traded power-play goals in the first period, setting the stage for a tense battle. In the third period, the Golden Knights’ Tomas Hertl struck first, but the Ducks’ Olen Zellweger answered with just 3:05 remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Anaheim drew first blood when Sennecke opened the scoring midway through the first period. However, the goal came at a cost. Forward Ryan Poehling was on the receiving end of a vicious hit from defenseman Brayden McNabb along the boards just nine minutes into the game. McNabb was assessed a five-minute interference penalty and a 10-minute game misconduct, giving the Ducks a extended power play. Sennecke capitalized 3 ½ minutes later, banging in his second power-play goal in as many games. It was his fifth goal of the playoffs and marked the third power-play goal Vegas’ once-formidable penalty kill had allowed in five tries. But the Ducks lost Poehling for the rest of the night.

Just two minutes after Sennecke’s goal, Ducks goalie Lukas Dostal—who arguably played his best game of the series—made a spectacular save to preserve the lead. He reached out to take the puck off the stick of Vegas winger Mitch Marner on a breakaway. However, Pavel Mintyukov was called for slashing on the play, giving Vegas a power play of its own. Dorofeyev made no mistake, scoring on a wrist shot from between the circles for his second man-advantage goal in as many games. Eichel earned an assist on the tying goal, extending his league-leading playoff total to 13 helpers.

Vegas would also lose a key player for much of the game, as Dorofeyev left the ice for an extended period. But he returned in time to play the hero and send the Ducks to the brink of elimination.
