The Anaheim Ducks delivered a gutsy performance in Game 5, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Vegas Golden Knights. Despite controlling play for long stretches, the Ducks fell 3-2 in overtime, with Pavel Dorofyev netting his second goal of the night at 4:10 of the extra frame. Now, Anaheim faces elimination as the series shifts back to Honda Center for Game 6 on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. PT.
Beckett Sennecke and Olen Zellweger provided the scoring for the Ducks, while Cutter Gauthier continued his playoff breakout with two assists. In net, Lukas Dostal was sharp, turning aside 29 shots. But it was the Ducks’ relentless push in the second and third periods that had fans on their feet—they outshot Vegas 27-16 over those 40 minutes and seized momentum when Zellweger buried his first career Stanley Cup Playoff goal with just 3:05 left in regulation.
However, in a city known for its heavyweight boxing bouts, Vegas delivered a knockout punch early in overtime. The Golden Knights came out firing, outshooting Anaheim 5-0 in the extra session and finally answering the bell after absorbing the Ducks’ best punches.
“I thought it was a very competitive game,” Ducks coach Joel Quenneville said. “It’s definitely a big letdown, but tomorrow you wake up, and it’s a new day.”
Dorofyev was the story of the night. He created Vegas’ first goal by stripping Chris Kreider of the puck on what would have been a short-handed two-on-one, then skated to the slot and beat Dostal to tie the game at 1. He even showed incredible toughness, missing at least two shifts in the second period after taking a slap shot to the knee before returning later in the frame. His game-winner came by batting Jack Eichel’s rebound out of midair past Dostal.
“That was a tight game. Lots of chances each way,” Zellweger said. “[Dostal] played phenomenal. We need to just reset, and we know what we need to do the next game.”
Cutter Gauthier has been playing like a superstar throughout this second-round series, and he was Anaheim’s best player again in Game 5. His crafty cross-slot pass set up Zellweger for the late equalizer, continuing a hot streak that now includes five assists over the past two games and the primary helper on each of the Ducks’ last four goals. If Anaheim hopes to extend their season, they’ll need more of that magic on Thursday night.
