The 2026 MotoGP season is shaping up to be a classic, and for the mighty Ducati team, it's a fight from an unfamiliar position: playing catch-up. Test rider Michele Pirro has openly stated the Italian squad is struggling to match the blistering pace set by Aprilia, with Marc Marquez's shoulder recovery adding another layer of challenge to their campaign.

This is a stark contrast to Ducati's recent dominance. For the first time since 2022, the factory has failed to secure a podium in the opening three rounds. While they swept all titles that year, the current landscape feels different. So far, only Fabio Di Giannantonio has broken through for Ducati, claiming a hard-fought third place in Brazil, narrowly ahead of a recovering Marquez in fourth—which stands as the factory team's best result.

The championship standings tell a clear story. Aprilia's dynamic duo of Marco Bezzecchi (81 points) and Jorge Martin (77 points) lead the pack, with KTM's Pedro Acosta (60 points) in third. Di Giannantonio leads the Ducati charge in fourth with 45 points, just ahead of Marquez on 40. The gap at the top is significant, and Pirro points to a combination of factors.

While Marquez's ongoing recovery from October shoulder surgery is a factor, Pirro acknowledges deeper issues with the GP26 machine. The bike has shown flashes of speed, evidenced by Marquez's Sprint Race win in Brazil and a near-win in Buriram, but translating that one-lap pace into consistent performance over a full Grand Prix distance has proven difficult.

"Now is the moment Aprilia are in top form," Pirro admitted. "It was bound to happen. They've done well, made a big step since last season, and started very strong. We've had our limitations and we're defending ourselves."

Despite the early deficit, the season is a marathon, not a sprint. Pirro remains confident, noting the recent break was crucial for Marquez's recovery. "The championship is still long, and I'm confident we'll get something out of it," he stated, while acknowledging the challenge ahead at circuits like Jerez, where Aprilia is expected to be formidable. For Ducati fans, the fightback is officially on.
