In a match that felt like a turning point for Celta Vigo, Borja Iglesias delivered a moment of pure magic to secure a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano. The win not only handed Atletico just their third home defeat in La Liga this season but also propelled Celta closer to European football next season—a dream that now feels tangible for the Galician side.

From the opening whistle, Atletico came out with intent, looking to shake off their midweek disappointment. Marcos Llorente was a constant threat down the right flank, and within 11 minutes, the hosts had already rattled the woodwork. A deflected shot off Antoine Griezmann bounced agonizingly wide, and Ademola Lookman’s rocket from the left side of the box crashed off the corner of the goal-frame. It was a statement of intent, but Celta stood firm.

For much of the first half, Celta struggled to find their rhythm, unable to string together meaningful attacks. But just before the half-hour mark, they began to show signs of life. Fer Lopez played a clever pass into Pablo Duran, who had a clear path to goal, but the chance went begging. Then Borja Iglesias worked a yard of space on the left side of the box, only to balloon his effort over the top right corner. Atletico responded through Llorente, whose shot whistled just wide of the far post, but the momentum was shifting. The sense that Atletico were imposing their will had started to fade.

The second half saw Celta grow in confidence. Five minutes in, they produced their best move of the match. A neat ball found Borja Iglesias, who combined with Oscar Mingueza and Fer Lopez, leading to a perfect lay-off for Ilaix Moriba in the D. The finish, however, was less than fitting—sailing over the bar. Atletico nearly punished them moments later, as a sweeping ball to the back post found Baena, and Alexander Sorloth’s backheel forced a spectacular save from Andrei Radu, who flew to his right to push the ball wide.

Just as Atletico seemed to be regaining control, pushing Celta back toward their own box, the game turned on a single, sublime moment. Williot Swedberg squeezed the ball out to Borja Iglesias on the left side of the box. With Jan Oblak and Robin Le Normand closing in, Iglesias produced a deft lob that seemed to hang in the air before dropping into the net. It was a finish straight from the heavens, and the Celta faithful—noisy in the corner of the Metropolitano—erupted in celebration.

The goal was a testament to Iglesias’ composure and Celta’s growing belief under Claudio Giraldez. For Atletico, it was a bitter pill to swallow, as their hopes of securing third place took a significant hit. For Celta, it was a statement: European football is no longer a distant dream, but a very real possibility.
