It wasn't the cleanest finish, but VfB Stuttgart will take it. The club officially secured fourth place in the Bundesliga and a coveted Champions League spot on Saturday, despite letting a two-goal lead slip in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Sebastian Hoeneß's squad came out firing on all cylinders. Just ten minutes in, Chris Führich delivered a pinpoint corner that found Chema Andrés, who rose highest to power a header past the Frankfurt keeper. The early strike set the tone, and Stuttgart looked firmly in control.
The visitors doubled their advantage late in the second half with a textbook attacking move. Führich once again played provider, lofting a clever ball forward to Deniz Undav, who unselfishly squared it for Nikolas Nartey to tap in from close range. At 2-0, the match seemed all but decided.
But Frankfurt had other plans. The home side clawed one back in the 72nd minute when Jonathan Burkardt calmly slotted home a penalty after being brought down by Stuttgart keeper Alexander Nübel. The goal breathed new life into the hosts, and the pressure mounted.
Deep into injury time, drama struck again. A handball from Chema Andrés gave Frankfurt a second penalty, and Burkardt stepped up once more. Ice in his veins, the 25-year-old buried it to level the score at 2-2 and silence the traveling Stuttgart supporters.
Despite the late collapse, the point was enough to keep Stuttgart in fourth place. They can thank fifth-placed Hoffenheim, who suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach and missed their chance to leapfrog Hoeneß's side. Sometimes, a draw feels like a win—especially when Champions League football awaits.
