Minnesota Golden Gophers starting quarterback Drake Lindsey found himself in hot water early Friday morning, arrested in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on charges of underage possession of alcohol and possessing a fake ID, according to Washington County records.
The incident unfolded just after midnight when employees at YeeHawg bar contacted a Fayetteville Police Department officer about a possible fake identification, per a preliminary police report obtained by ESPN. Staff directed the officer to Lindsey, who reportedly admitted to having a fake ID and consuming alcohol before arriving at the bar. Police later discovered a copy of the fraudulent ID in his wallet.
Lindsey, 20, was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where he signed forms for minor in possession of alcohol and attempted use of a fraudulent identification document. He was released about seven hours later after posting a $470 bond.
"We are aware of the situation and will address it internally," a Minnesota spokesperson said in a statement.
Despite this off-field setback, Lindsey is expected to return as the Gophers' starting quarterback for the 2026 season. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound sophomore made a splash last fall, starting all 13 games and leading Minnesota to eight wins—a school record for victories by a freshman quarterback. He completed 249 of 386 passes for 2,382 yards, 18 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, while adding four rushing scores.
His 63.2% completion rate ranked among the best single-season marks in program history, and his touchdown-to-interception ratio tied for third on Minnesota's all-time single-season list. Lindsey's breakout performance has made him one of the Big Ten's most promising young passers.
A Fayetteville native, Lindsey starred at Fayetteville High School, where he led the Bulldogs to a 13-0 record and an Arkansas state championship as a senior. He threw for 3,941 yards and 54 touchdowns that season, earning Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year honors.
Court hearings are scheduled for June 1 and June 29 in Fayetteville District Court. Minnesota is set to open the 2026 season on Sept. 3 against Eastern Illinois.
