When sport meets resilience, incredible things happen. Right now, four dragon boats are making their way from England to Ukraine—not for competition, but for recovery. These 40-foot racing vessels, donated by clubs across the UK, are headed to Odesa to help rehabilitate injured soldiers.

The story begins in 2023, when a Russian attack on the Black Sea city destroyed the Odesa Dragons' boathouse and equipment. The club, once a vibrant hub for dragon boat racing enthusiasts, was left without a way to get on the water. Now, the British dragon boating community is stepping up to change that.

Daniel Windsor, from events company Race the Dragon, which donated two of the boats, summed up the mission perfectly: "This gives Ukrainians the opportunity to head back out with their friends, with their colleagues on the water." And it's not just about the boats—the same lorry is packed with donated medical equipment, a generator, and even a sculling rowboat.

Dragon boat racing, which originated in China, has grown into a global sport. Before the war, Odesa was home to four active teams. Eleanor Fitzgerald, a member of the GB Senior Women's dragon boat racing team, has been the bridge between British enthusiasts and their Ukrainian counterparts since 2025. She recalls how the Odesa Dragon Boat Federation was a "really active club" before the invasion in 2022.

"Odesa is a huge city, a beautiful city based on the Black Sea," Fitzgerald says. "Unfortunately, since the war has started, things have really changed for them. When you live in a place that's a port, the water is part of everything they do. Not to be able to go on the water is terrible."

The logistics have been the biggest challenge, but the generosity hasn't wavered. Buoyancy aids, paddles, and safety equipment were already dispatched in January. Now, the four boats—donated by Race the Dragon, Pershore Dragon Boat Club in Worcestershire, and Thames Dragon Boat Club in London—are due to arrive in Odesa on Wednesday. Plans are already in motion to use them for a military veterans' rehabilitation program.

This is more than a donation. It's a reminder that the spirit of sport can heal, connect, and inspire—even in the toughest times.
