The Royal and Ancient Golf Club has made history by appointing Claire Dowling as its first female captain—a milestone moment coming 12 years after the club first opened its membership to women.

Dowling, who will take up the role for the 2026-27 term, was nominated by the club's past captains. Her one-year tenure officially begins with the traditional driving-in ceremony on the first tee of the Old Course at St Andrews on Friday, 25 September.

This appointment marks a significant chapter in the club's storied history. Dowling was among the first women to join the R&A after a landmark vote in 2015 opened membership to female golfers. Since then, she has been deeply involved in the club's governance, serving on the rules committee, general committee (including as deputy chair for both), and currently sitting on the membership committee.

Beyond her administrative contributions, Dowling boasts an impressive amateur playing career. She represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup four times, most notably as part of the historic 1986 team that secured the first-ever victory over the United States on American soil, winning 13-5 at Prairie Dunes. She later captained the GB&I Curtis Cup team at Ganton in 2000, where they narrowly fell 10-8, and has also led the Vagliano Trophy team and the Irish national side.

Born and raised in Dublin, Dowling represented Ireland in home internationals from 1979 to 1992 and competed in six European Team Championships. Her individual accolades include five Irish Championships (the first in 1983), the Ladies' British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 1986, and the Spanish Amateur Championship in 1987.

Dowling's expertise extends beyond the fairways. She has chaired England Golf's handicap and course rating committee and has served as a referee at The Open on seven occasions. At Royal St George's in 2021, she and her husband Peter—a retired District Judge—made history as the first married couple to referee at the same championship.

This appointment not only celebrates Dowling's remarkable contributions to the sport but also underscores the R&A's continued evolution as a modern, inclusive institution. For golfers and fans alike, it's a powerful reminder that the game's traditions are being rewritten by those who play, lead, and inspire.
