The Royal and Ancient Golf Club appoints Claire Dowling as its first female captain, 12 years after it opened its membership to women.

In a historic move for the sport, Claire Dowling has been named the first female captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, marking a significant milestone 12 years after the St Andrews institution opened its membership to women.

Dowling, who will serve as captain for the 2026-27 term, was nominated by the club's past captains. Her one-year tenure will officially begin with the traditional driving-in ceremony on the first tee of the iconic Old Course on Friday, September 25.

An early adopter of the club's expanded membership, Dowling joined in 2015 shortly after the historic vote to admit women. Since then, she has been deeply involved in club governance, serving on the rules committee and general committee—including as deputy chair for both—and currently contributing to the membership committee.

Her golfing credentials are equally impressive. As an amateur, Dowling represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup four times, most notably as part of the 1986 team that secured a landmark 13-5 victory over the United States on American soil at Prairie Dunes. She later captained the GB&I Curtis Cup team at Ganton in 2000 in a close 10-8 loss, and has also led the Vagliano Trophy team and the Irish national team.

Born and raised in Dublin, Dowling's competitive career spanned from 1979 to 1992, representing Ireland in home internationals and competing in six European Team Championships. Her trophy cabinet includes five Irish Championships—the first in 1983—along with the Ladies' British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 1986 and the Spanish Amateur Championship in 1987.

Beyond competition, Dowling has chaired England Golf's handicap and course rating committee and served as a referee at The Open on seven occasions. A particularly memorable moment came at Royal St George's in 2021, when she and her husband Peter, a retired District Judge, became the first married couple to referee at the same championship.

This appointment not only honors Dowling's remarkable contributions to the game but also underscores the Royal and Ancient Golf Club's continued evolution toward inclusivity in a sport steeped in tradition.
