Dover Motor Speedway is about to rewrite its history books. When the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star race roars into the "Monster Mile" on May 17, it'll mark the first time since 1969—a span of 107 races—that the track hosts a top-tier event without championship points on the line. And that's just the beginning of the excitement.
The All-Star format is anything but ordinary. The race will unfold in three segments over 350 laps, but here's the twist: only 26 drivers will survive to the final 200-lap showdown. The rest of the field? Eliminated. Those 26 contenders—selected through a mix of race wins, fan votes, and qualifying—will battle it out for a jaw-dropping $1 million prize. It's high stakes, high drama, and a completely fresh challenge for drivers and fans alike.
For Mike Tatoian, president and general manager of Dover Motor Speedway, this race is a welcome shake-up. "The reason why we like it is because we've never had it before," Tatoian says. "Any time you get a new product, I think it's good for the fans. Having the anomaly of it here for the first time in the northeast, we've created a lot of excitement around it."
The weekend promises more than just on-track action. The Craftsman Truck Series will kick things off with the Ecosave 200 on May 15, followed by the BetRivers 200 in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series on May 16. Off the track, Dover is rolling out a full slate of entertainment for fans—and you don't even need a race ticket to join the party. Think live music, fan zones, and the kind of electric atmosphere that defines NASCAR's biggest nights.
But there's a lingering question: without a points race on the calendar, could Dover lose its place in the regular-season lineup? Tatoian isn't worried. He points to North Wilkesboro Speedway, which hosted the All-Star race for three years before earning a points race back in 2025—its first since 1996. "We'll get a points race back," Tatoian insists. "Honestly, I just don't know when that will be. Ben Kennedy is really aggressive with scheduling, which I think has been good for the sport."
Whether you're a die-hard fan or a casual viewer, this All-Star race is shaping up to be a can't-miss event. With a wild format, a massive payout, and the iconic Monster Mile as the backdrop, Dover is proving that sometimes the biggest thrills come from trying something new.
