Mississippi State University and the broader sports community are mourning the loss of Doug Hutton, a legendary three-sport athlete and Hall of Famer, who passed away on May 9 at the age of 84.

A true Bulldog icon, Hutton excelled in basketball, baseball, and track and field from 1960 to 1964, leaving an indelible mark on each program. His extraordinary athleticism and dedication earned him a spot in both the M-Club Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

On the hardwood, Hutton was a standout guard, earning All-SEC third-team honors in 1964 and leading Mississippi State in scoring with an impressive 14.9 points per game. He was a key contributor to the Bulldogs' back-to-back SEC championships in 1962 and 1963, and played a pivotal role in the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1963—a historic moment known as the "Game of Change."

On the baseball diamond, Hutton dominated as a pitcher, posting a perfect 5-0 record with a stellar 2.15 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 1963. His performance earned him the team's pitching MVP award and a spot on the All-SEC Western Division team.

Hutton's speed and versatility also shone on the track, where he won SEC outdoor championships in the 4x110 relay in both 1962 and 1963.

Before his college career, Hutton was a high school phenom at Clinton High School, where he famously scored 101 points in a single day—47 in the semifinals and 54 in the state championship game. After graduating from Mississippi State, he transitioned into coaching, starting with the MSU basketball freshman team in 1965 and later leading high school basketball and baseball programs at Hazlehurst, Florence, and Clinton.

Funeral services will be held on May 15 at First Baptist Church in Clinton. Doug Hutton's legacy as a versatile athlete, dedicated coach, and Hall of Famer will forever be remembered by Bulldogs fans and the Mississippi sports community.
