Former Germany defender Niklas Süle has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season. The 30-year-old Borussia Dortmund centre-back will end his playing career when his contract expires on June 30, 2026, the club said on Thursday.

In a move that has sent ripples through the football world, Borussia Dortmund and Germany defender Niklas Süle has announced his retirement from professional football at the conclusion of the current season. The 30-year-old centre-back, whose contract with the Bundesliga giants expires on June 30, 2026, will hang up his boots for good this summer.

Süle revealed his decision on the "Spielmacher" podcast by 360Media, explaining that the thought of retiring had been on his mind for some time. The final straw came after a match against Hoffenheim in April, where he suffered a knee injury that left him fearing the worst. "I went into the shower and cried for 10 minutes," Süle recalled. "In that moment, I really thought: 'It's torn.'"

Fortunately, an MRI scan the next day revealed it wasn't a cruciate ligament tear, but the scare was enough to cement his decision. "I couldn't imagine anything worse than looking forward to life—being independent, going on holiday, spending time with my children—only to then have to come to terms with my third cruciate ligament tear," he added, referencing a career that has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries.

Süle's journey in professional football has been nothing short of remarkable. He launched his career at Hoffenheim before making a high-profile move to Bayern Munich for the 2017-18 season. During his time at the Allianz Arena, he became a key figure in a dominant side, winning five Bundesliga titles, two German Cups, and the UEFA Champions League in 2020. After four trophy-laden years in Munich, he joined Borussia Dortmund in 2022, where he brought his trademark strength and composure to the backline.

On the international stage, Süle earned 49 caps for Germany between 2016 and 2023, representing his country at major tournaments including the World Cup. His imposing presence and tactical intelligence made him a reliable figure for both club and country.

Dortmund had already announced that they would not extend Süle's contract beyond this season, but the defender's decision to retire entirely still comes as a surprise to many. Bayern Munich paid tribute to their former star on social media, writing: "Thank you for everything, Niki. Together, we've enjoyed great moments and celebrated a few titles. We wish you nothing but the best in your new chapter."

As Süle prepares to step away from the pitch, fans will remember him as a warrior who gave his all in every match—a player whose legacy is defined not just by silverware, but by his resilience in the face of adversity. For those who’ve followed his career, his retirement marks the end of an era for German football.
