Former Germany defender Niklas Süle has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season. The 30-year-old Borussia Dortmund centre-back will end his playing career when his contract expires on June 30, 2026, the club said on Thursday.

In a move that has sent ripples through the football world, Borussia Dortmund defender Niklas Süle has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of the current season. The 30-year-old centre-back, whose contract with the Black and Yellows runs until June 30, 2026, will hang up his boots this summer, the club confirmed on Thursday.

Süle, a former Germany international with 49 caps between 2016 and 2023, revealed his decision on the "Spielmacher" podcast. "I would like to announce that I will be ending my career this summer," he said, marking the end of a journey that saw him rise through the ranks at Hoffenheim before becoming a defensive stalwart for Bayern Munich and Dortmund.

The decision didn't come lightly. Süle had been toying with retirement for some time, but the final straw came after an emotional moment in April following a match against Hoffenheim. After injuring his knee, the sight of Dortmund's team doctor and physio testing his knee in the dressing room—and their concern over a possible cruciate ligament tear—triggered a flood of emotions. "I went into the shower and cried for 10 minutes. In that moment, I really thought: 'It's torn,'" Süle recalled.

When an MRI the next day revealed it wasn't a cruciate ligament tear after all, the relief was bittersweet. "It was 1,000% clear to me that it was over," he explained. "I couldn't imagine anything worse than looking forward to life—being independent, going on holiday, spending time with my children—only to then have to come to terms with my third cruciate ligament tear." Injuries have plagued Süle's career, and this moment crystallized his decision to step away while he still could.

Dortmund had already announced they wouldn't extend his contract after four years at the club, making the timing feel like a natural close to a chapter. Süle's career has been nothing short of decorated: he launched his professional career at Hoffenheim, then moved to Bayern Munich for the 2017-18 season, where he won five Bundesliga titles, two German Cups, and the Champions League in 2020. He joined Dortmund in 2022, adding another layer to his legacy.

For fans, this marks the end of an era for a player whose blend of strength and skill defined modern defending. As Süle prepares for life beyond the pitch—with holidays, family time, and independence ahead—his story serves as a reminder of the physical toll the beautiful game can take. From a promising youth to a Champions League winner, his journey is one for the history books.
