Los Angeles Lakers' Luka Doncic and Detroit Pistons' Cade Cunningham are eligible to win NBA end-of-season awards after successful appeals.

The NBA's end-of-season award races just got a major shakeup. In a significant ruling, superstars Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers and Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons have successfully appealed the league's 65-game minimum requirement, making them eligible for honors like MVP and All-NBA teams.

This "extraordinary circumstances" exemption comes after both fell just short of the threshold. Cunningham, a rising force for the Eastern Conference-leading Pistons, appeared in 63 games after missing 12 due to a collapsed lung. Doncic, the league's scoring leader, played 64 games, with two absences attributed to the birth of his daughter in Slovenia.

The impact of this decision is immense. Doncic, who recently led the NBA in European and Middle Eastern jersey sales, powered the Lakers to the playoffs with a league-high 2,143 regular-season points. Cunningham, who ranks second in the league with 634 assists, has been the engine for a Pistons team sitting atop their conference. Their inclusion instantly elevates the competition for the league's top individual accolades.

Not every appeal was successful, however. Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards, who played 60 games, saw his challenge denied, underscoring the specific nature of the exemptions granted to Doncic and Cunningham. As the postseason approaches, their award eligibility adds another compelling layer to an already thrilling NBA season.
