Luke Donald has expressed his delight at Jon Rahm's availability for Ryder Cup selection, following the Spaniard's resolution of his dispute with the DP World Tour. This news comes as a major boost for European golf fans and the team's preparations for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland.
Rahm, 31, was a standout performer in Europe's victorious campaigns under Donald in Rome in 2023 and in New York last September. However, his eligibility for the 2027 event had been in doubt after he initially declined a conditional release offer from the DP World Tour—an offer that eight other LIV Golf players had accepted. In March, Rahm even accused the European-based tour of "extorting players," adding tension to the situation.
But earlier this month, Rahm struck a deal with the DP World Tour to retain his membership, securing his spot for the biennial contest's centenary celebration, scheduled for September 17-19, 2027, in Limerick. Speaking ahead of the US PGA Championship in Pennsylvania, Donald shared his relief: "It's not my job to tell Jon what to do, but I'm delighted that a resolution has happened and that he's available for the Ryder Cup team. Jon has proved how valuable he can be in a Ryder Cup. He's played four and done extremely well. So to have him available for selection is pretty cool."
Donald is set to make history as the first European to serve three consecutive terms as captain since Bernard Gallacher led the team from 1991 to 1995. With Rahm's potential presence, Europe's already formidable side looks even stronger—especially given their unbeaten home record since The Belfry in 1993. The two-time major champion has been a clutch performer, collecting 10½ points since his debut at Le Golf National in 2018 and being part of winning teams in three of his four appearances. His foursomes record is particularly impressive, with a perfect six points from six matches in the alternate-shot format, and he was Europe's top points scorer in their last victory. For golf enthusiasts and fans of the Ryder Cup, this development adds an extra layer of excitement to the road ahead.
