STORRS — After a fabulous freshman season, Cat Petteys grew into a better softball player and a bigger role at UConn. But in one important way, she has not shaken off a freshman’s mindset, and doesn’t plan to do so any time soon. “The motto I try to live by every day is ‘act like there is something to prove, always,'” Petteys said. “There is no better time to prove anything than freshman year, ...

STORRS — The rise of Cat Petteys has been nothing short of remarkable. After earning Big East Freshman of the Year honors in 2025, the UConn shortstop has transformed into one of the most feared hitters in the conference—and she's doing it with a mindset that refuses to rest on past success.

"The motto I try to live by every day is 'act like there is something to prove, always,'" Petteys said. "There is no better time to prove anything than freshman year, and I did that. Then coming into this year, I tried to reset everything in my mind as though it's still my first year and I still have something to prove."

That relentless drive has fueled a spectacular sophomore campaign. Through 50 games, Petteys is hitting .378 while leading the Big East in home runs (17) and runs scored (52). Her defensive play at shortstop has also reached new heights, making her a complete two-way threat for the Huskies.

The respect she commands from opponents was on full display during a recent series against Creighton. After Petteys ripped three doubles in the opening win, the Bluejays responded by intentionally walking her three times in the next two games—a clear sign that opposing coaches know exactly how dangerous she is at the plate.

"It's no secret Cat is a powerhouse offensive threat," UConn coach Laura Valentino said. "You saw it this past weekend, where they walked her a couple of times so she didn't have the opportunity to change the game with one swing."

Petteys' emergence has been a driving force in UConn's remarkable turnaround. The Huskies stumbled out of the gate, losing 10 of their first 12 games and sitting at 4-15 when conference play began on March 8. But they've since found their stride, riding an 11-game winning streak and climbing to 25-25 overall, including a strong 15-6 mark in Big East play.

As the regular season winds down, UConn heads into its final series at Georgetown with momentum—and a star player who still plays like she has everything to prove.
