The road to the NFL is rarely a straight line. For every first-round star, there are countless undrafted rookies fighting tooth and nail to prove they belong. Miami Dolphins defensive end Mason Reiger is one of those players—and he's using every ounce of doubt as fuel for his fire.
Reiger's journey has been anything but smooth. After battling injuries during his college career that nearly forced him into early retirement, the former Louisville and Wisconsin standout went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft. But instead of letting that define him, he's turning it into motivation.
"It was just basically some doctor thought that, you know, not that he recommended medical retirement, but just like I should take it into consideration," Reiger shared after the first day of rookie minicamp. "I personally didn't agree with that. That kind of all led to the decision for me to end up transferring from Louisville to Wisconsin. And like I said, I just had full confidence in my physical health and the ability to move on and continue to play football. And so that's what I did."
That resilience paid off on the field. Across 44 games between the two schools, Reiger amassed 82 tackles, 13 sacks, four forced fumbles, four passes defensed, and a fumble recovery. Still, it wasn't enough to hear his name called during draft weekend.
"I felt like I deserved to be picked, but I think that's part of, you know, everything happens for a reason," Reiger said. "And I'm super blessed to how my story's played out. And this is just another opportunity for me to prove all these coaches right that took a chance on me and prove everybody wrong that didn't believe in me. You know, obviously, the fact that I wasn't drafted shows that I haven't done enough. So that's just another mindset push for me to keep going."
For the Dolphins, the edge rusher room is wide open behind starter Chop Robinson. If Reiger can consistently set the edge and pressure quarterbacks, he could carve out a meaningful role as a rookie. It's a long shot—but for a player who's already beaten the odds just to get here, it's exactly the kind of challenge he's ready for.
