Could there be a new QB available?

The NFL offseason is heating up, and not just with training camps and contract holdouts. A new name is making waves in quarterback circles, and it's not coming from the 2026 draft class. Texas Tech's Brendan Sorsby, who was expected to be one of the top signal-callers in college football this season, is now at the center of an NCAA gambling investigation. While the situation is still unfolding, the buzz around the league is that he may not suit up for the Red Raiders again—and that could open the door for a surprise NFL move.

Sorsby, a transfer who brought high expectations to Lubbock, was generating serious buzz as a potential supplemental draft pick. But with the investigation looming, his college future is murky at best. However, that uncertainty hasn't stopped several NFL teams from circling. According to NFL insider Albert Breer, the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, and Miami Dolphins are all expected to be in the mix for Sorsby's services if he becomes available.

“I have four teams here that I think kept their powder dry for the 2027 draft: The Jets, the Cardinals, the Browns, and the Dolphins,” Breer said on the “Rich Eisen Show.” “I think all four of those teams kicked the can down the road at various levels. Obviously, the Jets and the Dolphins went and got Malik Willis. They’ve all kind of patched the position together and basically said they don’t think there’s somebody worthy of taking that high in 2026. So they’re allowing themselves the opportunity to extend this out and get to 2027 and take one there. What happens if one of those teams says Brendan Sorsby is as good as any of the kids coming out next year? We’ll throw a second-round pick at it.”

The logic is simple: if a team believes Sorsby has the talent to compete with next year's quarterback prospects, why wait? A supplemental draft pick—likely a second-rounder—could be a low-risk, high-reward gamble for a franchise in need of a long-term answer under center.

Cleveland, New York, and Miami stand out as the most obvious landing spots. The Browns are still searching for stability after years of quarterback carousel. The Jets, despite adding Malik Willis, have yet to lock down a franchise guy. And the Dolphins? They're hoping Willis can be the answer, but if he struggles, Sorsby could be a compelling fallback option.

For now, all eyes are on the NCAA's next move. But if Sorsby becomes available, don't be surprised to see a bidding war between these QB-needy teams. In the NFL, where finding a franchise passer is the ultimate prize, a little uncertainty has never stopped a team from swinging for the fences.
