When Malik Willis entered the NFL Draft, comparisons to Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts were inevitable. Both quarterbacks possess a rare blend of arm strength and mobility that can turn a broken play into a highlight-reel touchdown. Now, as Willis joins the Miami Dolphins, there's one coach who knows that comparison better than most.
Kevin Patullo, the Dolphins' new passing game coordinator, spent last season calling plays for Hurts in Philadelphia. So when asked if he sees the same traits in Willis, his answer was both measured and revealing.
"I haven't been with him enough yet," Patullo admitted. "But Jalen's big thing is winning. He finds ways to win games, and that's what makes him special. That said, you can definitely see some similarities in how they move and extend plays. That's what makes guys like Malik, Jalen, and even Patrick Mahomes so dangerous. When you can extend a play, the defense is in a real bind."
Patullo emphasized how extending plays changes the entire dynamic of a defense. "Now they've got to cover for that extra second longer. The rush gets there in three seconds, but suddenly it's five, six, seven seconds. There are certain coverages you just can't run because these guys can scramble. It's a weapon, plain and simple."
For Dolphins fans, that versatility could be the key to unlocking a new dimension in their offense. If Willis can bring even a fraction of Hurts' playmaking ability to Miami, the AFC East just got a whole lot more interesting.
