The Freeway Series is finally here, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are bringing the star power back to the diamond for Friday night's opener against the Angels.
After a brief rest day on Thursday, both Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts are back in the starting lineup. Ohtani slots in as the designated hitter and leadoff man, with Betts hitting second. However, first baseman Freddie Freeman gets a breather tonight, giving fans a chance to see rookie Dalton Rushing man the bag.
In a late-game shakeup, the Dodgers scratched scheduled starter Blake Snell. According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the team will pivot to a bullpen game. Reliever Will Klein is expected to get the start—a role he's familiar with after a lengthy outing in Game 3 of the World Series. Klein has been sharp this season, boasting a 2.76 ERA and 0.3 bWAR over 12 appearances.
Look for a committee of arms to follow Klein, including Jack Dreyer (who's had two days of rest), Wyatt Mills, and veteran Blake Treinen. The Angels will counter with Jack Kochanowicz, who enters with a 2-2 record, a 3.97 ERA, and 30 strikeouts on the year.
Behind Ohtani and Betts, the Dodgers' lineup packs a punch: catcher Will Smith moves back to the third spot after hitting a leadoff homer Thursday night. Kyle Tucker cleans up, followed by Andy Pages, Max Muncy, Teoscar Hernández, Dalton Rushing at first, and Hyeseong Kim batting ninth.
First pitch at Angel Stadium is set for 6:38 p.m. PT. With stars returning and a bullpen game in play, this Freeway Series opener promises plenty of drama.
