The Los Angeles Dodgers just got a major boost to their lineup. After missing 32 games with a strained oblique, superstar Mookie Betts has been activated from the injured list, marking his first appearance since April 4. To make room on the active roster, the team has optioned infielder Alex Freeland to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Betts is set to bat second in Friday night's game against the Rockies, and his return couldn’t come at a better time for a Dodgers squad looking to solidify its infield. Betts played two rehab games with Oklahoma City, a notable milestone since he hadn't suited up in the minors since 2015. During those games, he singled in each contest, drew a walk, and logged 11 total innings at shortstop—a sign that he's ready to contribute immediately.
Freeland, who won the heavy side of a second-base platoon in spring training, saw his role expand significantly after Betts went down. Over 31 starts at second base, he posted three outs above average (tied for fifth in MLB) and three defensive runs saved (tied for eighth). However, his bat struggled, hitting just .235/.309/.337 with an 86 wRC+, two home runs, and a team-high 28.6 percent strikeout rate. While his glove was reliable, the Dodgers are clearly prioritizing Betts' elite production and defensive versatility.
With Freeland headed to Triple-A, the door opens for Hyeseong Kim to see more regular action at second base. Kim, an excellent defender in his own right, started 24 of 32 games at shortstop during Betts' absence. Since returning from Triple-A in April, he's been swinging a hot bat, slashing .289/.353/.395 with a 114 wRC+, three doubles, a home run, and a triple. His combination of contact skills and defensive prowess makes him a natural fit to fill the gap.
The Dodgers also have Santiago Espinal as a right-handed option off the bench, but his role could be short-lived. Kiké Hernández is eligible to return from the injured list in about two weeks, which will force another roster decision. For now, the focus is on Betts' return and how it reshapes a lineup that's been searching for consistency.
