The Los Angeles Dodgers made a savvy offseason move by bringing Rocco Baldelli aboard as a special assistant, just months after the Minnesota Twins parted ways with their longtime manager. Baldelli, who spent seven seasons at the helm in Minnesota from 2019 to 2025, compiled a 527-505 record over more than 1,000 games. He burst onto the scene by winning the American League Manager of the Year award in his debut season, leading the Twins to a division title and earning widespread praise for his calm, analytical approach.

Baldelli's path to Los Angeles was paved by familiar faces. Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman previously worked with Baldelli when both were with the Tampa Bay Rays, where Baldelli started as a minor league instructor before moving to the big league staff. Friedman has a well-known tendency to surround himself with trusted former colleagues from his Rays days. Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes, for instance, pitched for Tampa Bay while Friedman was in charge, and Chris Archer—who joined the Dodgers front office in 2023—also played under Friedman with the Rays and later pitched for Baldelli in Minnesota.

Given those deep connections, it was almost a foregone conclusion that Baldelli would land in Los Angeles after the Twins decided to go in a new direction. But the 44-year-old Rhode Island native isn't content to simply bide his time as a special assistant. During the 2025 offseason, he was already a candidate for several managerial openings, though he didn't land a job. Now, with the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox shaking up their coaching staffs early in the 2026 cycle, Baldelli's name is heating up once again.

The Athletic's Tyler Kepner recently highlighted Baldelli as a name to watch in the managerial carousel, noting that "a former Manager of the Year award winner, Baldelli took the Twins to three postseason berths while interacting smoothly with the front office, the players and the media." Meanwhile, Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press reported that Baldelli will receive serious consideration from the Red Sox, especially given his New England roots—he grew up in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, just a short drive from Boston. With the Red Sox job open after Alex Cora's firing, the hometown connection could be a compelling factor.

For now, Baldelli remains a valuable asset in the Dodgers' front office, but it's clear that his managerial ambitions are far from over. Whether it's in Boston, Philadelphia, or elsewhere, this is a name that will keep popping up as teams look for their next dugout leader.
