In the ultra-competitive NL West, division rivals rarely help each other out. But the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks just bucked that trend with a rare in-division trade that sends former top prospect Alek Thomas to L.A.

The Dodgers acquired the 25-year-old outfielder in exchange for minor league prospect Jose Requena. Los Angeles will also absorb the roughly $1.4 million remaining on Thomas' arbitration salary. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated Michael Siani for assignment. Thomas is expected to report to Triple-A Oklahoma City to begin his tenure with the organization.

This move gives Thomas a fresh start after a frustrating offensive stretch in Arizona. Once ranked among baseball's elite prospects, he burst onto the scene in 2022 with sky-high expectations after dominating the minor leagues. The raw talent has never been in question—he's always had the tools to be a difference-maker.

But the bat has simply never clicked consistently at the Major League level. Over parts of four seasons, Thomas has struggled mightily at the plate, carrying a career slash line that falls well short of those early projections. The root of the problem? His approach. Thomas ranks among the league leaders in swing rate and chase rate on pitches outside the strike zone. That aggressive mindset has led to poor walk rates and inconsistent contact, especially against breaking balls and offspeed stuff.

Here's where it gets interesting: The Dodgers have built a reputation as one of the few organizations where reclamation projects actually flourish. And Thomas still brings something valuable to the table—elite defense in center field. With Los Angeles lacking a true backup behind starter Andy Pages, Thomas provides much-needed depth. Plus, he still has a minor league option remaining, meaning the Dodgers can stash him in Triple-A while working to rebuild his offensive approach.

This move feels like classic Dodgers baseball. Take a talented former prospect whose stock has plummeted, plug him into one of the game's best player development systems, and see if adjustments can unlock that long-awaited potential. If it works? They may have just quietly added a valuable piece for the stretch run.
