The Los Angeles Dodgers are making a pivotal roster shuffle as superstar shortstop Mookie Betts prepares to return from the injured list on Monday. In a move that underscores the team's depth and strategic planning, the Dodgers will option second baseman Alex Freeland to Triple-A, according to reports.

Freeland had been battling alongside Hyeseong Kim and Santiago Espinal to secure a spot on the active roster once Betts rejoined the lineup. However, the 24-year-old infielder's performance at the plate ultimately fell short of securing his place in the big leagues.

Through his first 33 games this season, Freeland posted a modest .235 batting average with a .646 OPS, hitting just two home runs and driving in eight RBIs across 98 at-bats. His transition to Major League pitching proved challenging, as he struck out at a 28.6% rate—ranking in the bottom 20% of MLB hitters—while walking at only a slightly above-average clip. Despite showing promise defensively, recording three outs above average and a plus-3 fielding run value, his offensive struggles made him the odd man out.

A stint in Triple-A could be just what Freeland needs to refine his approach at the plate. Regular everyday at-bats will provide him with valuable experience and the opportunity to continue developing his game against quality pitching.

With Betts slotting back in at shortstop, the Dodgers' infield alignment will shift. Kim is expected to move from shortstop to second base, where he'll likely form a platoon with veteran Miguel Rojas. Rojas had previously shared second base duties with Freeland earlier in the season, so this adjustment maintains continuity while maximizing the team's defensive versatility.

For Dodgers fans, this roster move highlights the organization's commitment to both winning now and developing young talent for the future. As Betts returns to anchor the infield, all eyes will be on how this reshuffled lineup performs in the coming weeks.
