Every big leaguer has a "Welcome to the Show" moment—that unforgettable instant when the game humbles you and reminds you that you're no longer in the minors. For Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Kiké Hernández, that moment came fast, loud, and from the mouths of two of the game's most intense competitors.

Appearing on "The 6-1-1 Podcast" alongside former MLB stars Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard, Hernández recalled a trial by fire that unfolded within his first two weeks in the big leagues. The setting? Houston. The antagonists? Jake Peavy and John Lackey, back-to-back.

"I was pretty locked in. I wasn't really chasing like I do now. My eyes worked, I didn't need glasses," Hernández said with a laugh. "And I was taking pitches just off. They were trying to get me to expand and all this. And these dudes, for back-to-back games, they were yelling at me on the mound."

Peavy and Lackey built careers on intimidation and unrelenting competitiveness. As Rollins and Howard exchanged knowing smiles and countless "for sures," it became clear that Hernández had stumbled into a rite of passage shared by many young hitters. But for the rookie, the experience was bewildering.

"They're mad at me because I'm not swinging at balls," Hernández explained. "That was probably my 'Welcome to the big leagues' moment, because I'm like, 'Goddamn, what did I do?' I'm trying to do my job, I'm trying to stick around. You know, I'm just glad I'm wearing a one-ear flap helmet right now, and you guys are just yelling at me because I'm not swinging at balls. What's happening right now?"

Rollins, a former teammate of Hernández in Los Angeles, quickly confirmed what the young infielder was experiencing. "They're screaming at every pitch they don't get. They're yelling," Rollins said. "I don't know what they're saying. I just ignored it."

While Rollins admitted he didn't face Lackey often, he had plenty of history with Peavy. "Jake, the first time you hear it, you kind of look up like, 'Bro, like what? Like, what's going on?'" Rollins recalled. "And then you realize he's yelling at the catcher, he's talking to himself, and it's just a conversation that he's having to keep himself locked in that moment, because he's not giving an inch. He's not giving in."

For Hernández, now a seasoned veteran with multiple postseason heroics under his belt, that early encounter with two fiery competitors serves as a perfect snapshot of baseball's unique culture. In a game where mental toughness is just as important as physical skill, sometimes the loudest lessons are the ones you never forget.
