The Los Angeles Dodgers made a roster move Sunday, calling up right-handed reliever Wyatt Mills from Triple-A Oklahoma City to provide some much-needed bullpen depth. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team moved star closer Edwin Díaz to the 60-day injured list.
This transaction comes after a grueling stretch for the Dodgers' bullpen. Over their last three games, relievers have combined to pitch 18⅓ innings—a heavy workload that began when Tyler Glasnow left his Wednesday start early with back spasms after just one inning. The Dodgers had to use six relievers to cover the remaining eight innings that night.
The dominoes kept falling. Blake Snell was activated from his rehab assignment ahead of schedule to fill Glasnow's rotation spot, but he managed only three innings on Saturday, throwing 77 pitches. That left the bullpen to cover another long night, culminating in a 7-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves.
Rookie Paul Gervase was the workhorse in that game, tossing a career-high three innings and 50 pitches. It was his longest outing since August 2023, when he threw 3⅓ innings for High-A Brooklyn. Unfortunately for Gervase, that yeoman's effort led to his option back to Oklahoma City to make room for Mills.
"Obviously we've got Wrobo going tomorrow, and we're going to have to lean on him," manager Dave Roberts said Saturday night. "There's a few guys I feel really good about tomorrow being available. We'll probably make another move to get another arm, for more coverage."
Enter Wyatt Mills. The 31-year-old was a non-roster invitee during spring training and has been lights out for Oklahoma City, posting a 3.26 ERA with an impressive 36.4% strikeout rate over 19⅓ innings. He's struck out 28 batters while walking just seven.
Mills last pitched Thursday, throwing just eight pitches in a one-out appearance. With plenty left in the tank, he's ready to help stabilize a bullpen that's been running on fumes. For a team with championship aspirations, having fresh arms is crucial—and the Dodgers are hoping Mills can provide exactly that.
