The Los Angeles Dodgers have made an early-season move to bolster their pitching depth, acquiring right-handed pitcher Griff McGarry from the Philadelphia Phillies.
McGarry, 27, arrives as a former top prospect looking for a fresh start. Once ranked No. 51 overall by Baseball Prospectus in 2023, his journey has been a winding one. Drafted twice—first by Texas in 2017, then by Philadelphia in 2021—he has spent six years developing in the minors, awaiting his MLB debut.
His path took another turn this past offseason when he was selected by Washington in the Rule 5 Draft, only to be designated for assignment and returned to the Phillies. Now, he finds a new home with a Dodgers organization renowned for its player development.
For now, McGarry is expected to report to Triple-A Oklahoma City. He'll join a deep and talented pool of right-handed arms in the Dodgers' system, meaning an immediate call-up is unlikely barring a spectacular performance.
However, this is precisely the type of under-the-radar acquisition where the Dodgers excel. Their track record of refining pitchers and unlocking potential is well-established. With his pedigree and a new development staff, McGarry has a prime opportunity to reset his career and work toward finally reaching the big leagues in his physical prime.
