The Los Angeles Dodgers are getting their superstar back. Mookie Betts has been activated from the injured list and is set to start at shortstop, batting second in tonight's lineup against the San Francisco Giants.
Betts has been sidelined since April 5 with a strained right oblique, an injury that occurred during a game against the Washington Nationals. He felt pain in his right lower back while running the bases and was removed before the bottom of the first inning. An MRI later confirmed the oblique strain, keeping one of baseball's most dynamic players out for over a month.
To make room for Betts on the active roster, the Dodgers optioned infielder Alex Freeland to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 23-year-old had been starting at second base but struggled at the plate, batting just .235/.309/.337 over 112 plate appearances. Despite the offensive woes, Freeland's defense was exceptional, earning 4 Defensive Runs Saved and 3 Outs Above Average. The Dodgers opted to send him down to ensure he gets consistent at-bats in the minors rather than sitting on the bench.
Other potential roster moves were considered, but the team decided to keep Hyeseong Kim, who has impressed since filling in for Betts at shortstop with a .289/.353/.395 slash line. Santiago Espinal also remains on the roster, valued for his ability to step into a utility role without needing everyday playing time.
On the mound, the Giants will start Trevor McDonald (1-0, 1.29 ERA), filling in for Logan Webb, who landed on the IL with right knee bursitis. The Dodgers counter with Roki Sasaki (1-3, 5.97 ERA) as they look to get back on track with their star shortstop back in the fold.
