The Los Angeles Dodgers have added another arm to their pitching mix, acquiring right-hander Griff McGarry from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for international bonus pool money.
This move comes after a whirlwind offseason for the 26-year-old. McGarry was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft but was returned to Philadelphia at the end of spring training. During his brief stint with the Nationals, he posted a 3.18 ERA across six appearances, showcasing flashes of the potential that made him a fifth-round pick out of the University of Virginia in 2021.
For the Dodgers, this is a low-risk, high-reward acquisition typical of a front office known for its depth-building. McGarry brings a power arm to the organization, having racked up 424 strikeouts over six minor league seasons. While command has been a challenge—evidenced by 209 walks—his strikeout ability offers intriguing upside for player development.
He began this season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, making five appearances. The Dodgers will now look to harness his raw talent, hoping he can become a reliable bullpen piece or depth starter as they navigate the long MLB season and pursue another championship run.
