The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a strategic move to bolster their outfield depth, acquiring center fielder Alek Thomas from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for 17-year-old minor league prospect Jose Requena. This trade, announced Tuesday, adds a defensive specialist to the Dodgers' roster as they gear up for the remainder of the season.

Thomas, 26, is known primarily for his elite glovework in center field, boasting 13 career Outs Above Average—though 12 of those came during his standout first two seasons in 2022-23. Offensively, however, the left-handed hitter has struggled at the plate, posting a career slash line of .230/.273/.361 with a 73 wRC+. This season, he managed just a .181/.222/.340 line with a 54 wRC+ in 100 plate appearances before being designated for assignment by Arizona last Friday.

With the Dodgers' current outfield rotation featuring Andy Pages, Kyle Tucker, and Teoscar Hernández—who have combined for 115 of the team's 123 outfield starts this year—playing time in the majors will be tight. Alex Call, who has covered the remaining eight starts, bats right-handed and has minor league options, while Thomas provides a left-handed alternative. Against right-handed pitching, Thomas has historically fared better, slashing .240/.286/.382 with an 82 wRC+.

Thomas still has an option year remaining, having used options in both 2023 and 2024, giving the Dodgers flexibility to move him between the majors and minors as needed. He enters this season with three years and 103 days of major league service time.

To clear space on the 40-man roster for Thomas, the Dodgers designated outfielder Michael Siani for assignment. Siani, another defense-first player, was claimed off waivers twice by Los Angeles during the offseason. Although he never made it to the big leagues with the Dodgers, the 26-year-old was hitting .225/.355/.303 with an 84 wRC+ for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

As for Requena, the 17-year-old outfielder signed out of Venezuela in January as part of the Dodgers' international class and has yet to make his professional debut. This trade underscores the Dodgers' commitment to winning now while also investing in their future, and Thomas's defensive prowess could prove valuable in late-game situations or as an injury replacement down the stretch.
