The Los Angeles Dodgers made another savvy roster move on Tuesday, acquiring outfielder Alek Thomas from the Arizona Diamondbacks. In exchange, they sent minor league outfielder Jose Requena to Arizona. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated outfielder Michael Siani for assignment.
While this trade won't single-handedly shake up the NL West standings, it's a classic Dodgers move: identify a talented player whose stock is down, acquire him at a reasonable price, and see if their development system can unlock his potential.
Thomas, 26, was once a highly regarded prospect in Arizona's organization. A second-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, he made his big league debut with the Diamondbacks in 2022. His calling cards have always been elite athleticism, plus speed, and the ability to cover center field. The big question mark has always been his bat.
For Los Angeles, Thomas adds a much-needed left-handed bat to the lineup, provides another capable center fielder, and offers late-game value as a defensive replacement and pinch-runner. At worst, he deepens the outfield pool. At best, the Dodgers find a tweak in his swing and turn him into a productive piece for a team with World Series aspirations.
This move doesn't appear to threaten Andy Pages' role, as the young outfielder has earned more playing time with his offensive production. Thomas will need to hit his way into a larger role. But as a bench piece, defensive sub, or matchup option, there's a clear path for him to contribute.
The Dodgers didn't give up a major name to get this deal done. They took a flier on a former top prospect from a division rival. For this front office, that's usually a bet worth making.
