Do you remember the first time you walked through the gates of Kauffman Stadium? That electric buzz, the green grass, the crack of the bat—it's a memory that sticks with you forever.
Yesterday was School Day at the K, and hundreds, maybe even thousands, of Kansas City-area kids got to experience their very first Royals game. Sure, they learned early that being a Royals fan sometimes means watching a lot of losing, but they also saw a couple of dingers on a beautiful day in one of baseball's most beautiful ballparks. Hopefully, they'll be back for more.
Most of us have been to the K dozens—if not hundreds—of times by now. But can you recall your first game? I think my parents might have taken me when I was really young, but the first one I truly remember was in April 1988, when I'd just become a rabid baseball fan. Thanks to the details stuck in my memory, I can pinpoint the exact game. Here's what I recall:
The Baltimore Orioles were in the middle of an epic losing streak to start the season. The Royals were actually losing to them before staging a comeback. Then, the Royals pinch-hit Thad Bosley, and the crowd around me groaned. That's the day I learned what a "pinch-hitter" was—and also that Royals fans can be pretty sarcastic and use some salty language!
The game ended in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off hit. No fireworks back then, but the joy was just as real. Thanks to the internet, I found it was April 23, 1988. Thanks for the game-winner, Kurt Stillwell! That Orioles team lost their first 21 games that year. Yikes.
Now it's your turn. Do you remember your first Royals game? Was it the sight of the stadium for the first time? A specific play? A family moment? Share your memories—we'd love to hear them.
