In a move that reshapes the defensive line, veteran nose tackle DJ Reader is leaving the Detroit Lions to join the New York Giants, signing with the team on Tuesday. After anchoring the middle of Detroit's defensive front for the past two seasons, Reader now brings his imposing presence to the Big Apple.

Reader, who turns 32 in July, arrived in Detroit as one of the Lions' marquee free-agent signings in 2024. His reputation as a run-stuffing force was well-earned during a standout four-year stretch with the Cincinnati Bengals. After recovering from a torn quadriceps tendon that offseason, he stepped into the starting lineup in Week 2 and quickly became a cornerstone of the Lions' defense. Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 330 pounds, Reader used his powerful frame to command double teams and clog running lanes, tallying four tackles for loss and three sacks in his first season. He also recorded 13 "stops"—tackles that resulted in offensive failures—showcasing his ability to disrupt plays before they developed.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised Reader's consistency, saying, "There is comfort to what he is and what he’s able to do for us. He is a steady force and he can play the nose, he can play the three, he gives you flexibility."

But the winds of change began blowing last April, when Detroit used a first-round draft pick on Tyleik Williams, a player with a similar profile to Reader. With Reader approaching his 31st birthday, the writing was on the wall. While Reader remained a starter this past season and played a full year for the first time since 2018, his production dipped noticeably. For the first time in his Lions tenure, he failed to record a single tackle for loss or sack.

Late in the season, Reader acknowledged the downturn but remained philosophical. "I’ve felt like I’ve played some decent ball," he said. Still, he understood the business side of the NFL. "I’d love to be here, love the guys, love the coaches, so we’ll see. You never know how free agency works out. They got some other stuff they got to take care of so I’m sure it’s more important than me right now."

For the Giants, Reader brings veteran leadership and a proven track record to a defense looking to bolster its interior. For Lions fans, his departure marks the end of an era—a reminder that even the most reliable forces in the trenches eventually move on. As Detroit turns to younger talent, Reader's legacy as a steady, powerful presence in the middle will not be forgotten.
